Scientists don't fully understand what causes ice ages, but they think sunlight plays a big role. Less sunlight in the northern hemisphere means colder temperatures and more ice. This can start an ice age. More sunlight warms things up and melts ice, possibly ending an ice age. Other factors, like changes in ocean water flow, also matter. Scientists are studying how these factors start and end ice ages.
