Read the passage and choose the correct answer.
"Ice age" is when glaciers and ice sheets cover large parts of the Earth. The Earth has had many ice ages, with at least five major ones occurring. The earliest started over 2 billion years ago!
During an ice age, the climate changes often. It changes between glacial periods and interglacial periods. During glacial periods, temperatures are much colder than they are today. Ice sheets and glaciers expand, covering more of the planet. These periods can last tens of thousands of years. The last glacial period started about 120,000 years ago and ended 11,500 years ago. In interglacial periods, temperatures rise, and ice sheets shrink. The climate is warmer and wetter than it is during glacial periods. We're currently in an interglacial period that started 11,500 years ago. Generally, glacial periods last longer than interglacial periods during an ice age.
Scientists don't fully understand what causes ice ages, but they think sunlight plays a big role. Less sunlight in the northern hemisphere means colder temperatures and more ice. This can start an ice age. More sunlight warms things up and melts ice, possibly ending an ice age. Other factors, like changes in ocean water flow, also matter. Scientists are studying how these factors start and end ice ages.
