Tet Folklore: The Story of Lucky Money
1. Once upon a time, all evil spirits lived in a giant peach blossom tree in the East Sea. These spirits were kept inside the tree under the control of many powerful gods, so people were safe and protected.
2. However, on the eve of Tet, people became frightened as the gods had to leave the peach blossom tree to gather in the heavens and find out their new tasks for the upcoming year. Families would stay awake all night long so that they could ward off the evil spirits on their own. It was exhausting.
3. One day, some evil ogres escaped the tree and came to the land. They sought to scare children. They would rub their faces and hair until they cried!
4. When the gods found out, they were angry. Some of them went to the village and disguised as gold coins. Families covered the coins with red cloth and placed them under their children's pillows. When the evil spirits came to the houses, the coins sparkled brightly and scared them away.
5. News of how the children were protected spread across the land! To this day, the Vietnamese people give lucky money, or li xi, in red envelopes to children during the celebration of the Lunar New Year.
