Most people use technology every single day. People communicate using technology by not only using words but emojis, too. Emojis are real images and symbols that can be sent and shared using technology. Emojis are the best idea ever! That is because emojis are an important way that people communicate with each other. Emojis were created in the late 1990s by Shigetaka Kurita in Japan. The way that inspired him was that weather forecasts use symbols to help show the weather for the day. Kurita created a set of 180 emojis based on the faces people were making and everyday objects. Emojis are essential because they help to add emotions to messages shared with text. Since typed words do not show emotions, emojis were created to help add feelings to emotionless text. Amazingly, in 2015, the Word of the Year was emoji. The emoji ‘Face with Tears of Joy' was chosen because it was the most used emoji in 2015. There is no doubt that emojis are an excellent form of communication, and that is something to smile about.

Teenagers love their cellphones and social networking sites, but there's conflict at home because of it. I talked to kids, parents and expected to find out what's going on.

A.

‘My cellphone is a great way for me to communicate with my friends,' student Sarah Davis says. Sarah explained that she wanted to hang out with her friends after school - at the mall or in the park - but these days it isn't easy. She said her mother, Becky, worried about her going out alone. ‘So, we go to social networking sites and hang out that way.' Becky isn't happy about it. ‘That's all she does,' she complains.

B.

In the past 30 years, parents have become more worried about security issues. Becky explained that kids in her generation hung out together every day. They rode their bikes to the mall, to each other's houses, or to the park. ‘But I just don't think that's safe anymore,' she says.

C.

Dr. Richard Turner said that conflict about cellphone use is becoming a common problem in families. These kids grew up with cellphones. At the same time, parents are uncomfortable with the constant cellphone use. Obviously, families need to find a balance between safety concerns and a teenager's need to be with friends.'

D.

Students are busier than they used to be. This is another reason why they spend time on social networking sites. ‘Universities like students who are active and engaged,' student Mike Owens explains. That means Mike does sports or other activities every day after school. ‘There's just no time to hang out with my friends. We use social networking sites instant,' Mike laughs. He said that his parents sometimes get upset about this. ‘But what can I do? It's the reality!'
