Computers, cell phones and electronic tablets have transformed the world of communication. Words like stamps, post office or correspondence are no longer found in the vocabulary of youths. They have been replaced by words such as Instagram, Twitter, inbox, hashtag and Facebook. Your pen pal, or should we say ‘key pal', is only a click away.
Nevertheless, everyone does not approve of these new methods of communication. Teachers for example, are of two minds. On the one hand, it is good that students spend more of their free time communicating and as a result get more practicing writing. On the other hand, there is very little attention paid to correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Many older people, who are more used to the formal business letter or correspondences, feel that the style of writing in use is too informal. For instance, it is quite common to use first or nicknames even though one has never met the person.
Although messaging is a new way of communicating, it will probably never replace telephone calls or ordinary letters. It is just another, very efficient, means of communication.

In the past, friends used to call or meet up to catch up on each other's news. With the rise of technological communication, personal contact is becoming less frequent, and more distant communication methods like emails, texts, or instant messaging are taking its place.
Many people worry that the younger generation is losing the social skills they need to communicate. When communicating face-to-face, young people feel uncomfortable, and keeping eye contact is difficult for them. They avoid making phone calls and prefer to send someone a text, even when they are in the next room.
Is this a problem? Or is this just the way that humans are evolving? Recent research has shown that two-thirds of teenagers are more likely to text their friends than call them. Young people often prefer to text because they can hide aspects of their personalities. For example, if they are shy, they can seem cooler. Also, texting is a way to stay in touch with more people, as it's impossible to see lots of people face-to-face. So, many teenagers believe this distant way of communicating is actually improving communication.
There is no doubt that face-to-face communication is more than just words. When speaking to someone face-to-face, your tone of voice and body language play an important role, too. Today, many people are going against the trend of distant communication. ‘No email' days are becoming popular in the USA, and companies are encouraging people to pick up the phone, talk to another human being, or even meet face-to-face.
